Time Management for Caregivers: Holiday Edition
The holidays are a great time to reunite with friends and family, but it’s not always a relaxing time of year. Time management for caregivers during the holidays isn’t easy. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season, from shopping to social gatherings to family get-togethers, can be incredibly stressful, and when you have a loved one to care for, your own obligations can fall by the wayside.
Are you trying to figure out how you can complete your to-do list in time for the holidays? Try the following tips for time management for caregivers during the holiday season.
- Divide and conquer. Struggling with wrapping gifts? Is your hand cramping from signing so many holiday cards? Enlist the help of a friend or family member who can help wrap gifts. Reserve an afternoon to visit, sip hot cocoa, and write out all of your holiday cards together with your older family member helping in whatever way they’re able.
- Go virtual, and avoid the shopping malls. Going out to a crowded mall can be challenging this time of year, particularly when caring for someone who has difficulty leaving home. Online shopping can be taken care of from pretty much anywhere, in the doctor’s office, before going to bed while watching TV, etc., and is considerably less stressful than struggling through the large holiday crowds.
- Be selective about “made from scratch.” The pressure for a memorable meal is on during the holidays, but not everything on your table needs to be homemade. Select one or two items for your holiday menu that you would like to make from scratch, and incorporate some microwavable or pre-made dishes to round out the table and save you some precious time.
